1950 RTU--we'eve had it since March. Starts good, runs good but has a clanky, grumbly noise that seems to be coming from the clutch area or maybe the belt pulley shaft area. It's not engine (rods, etc. because we've run it a lot and long enough to eliminate that problem.) And sometimes it almost sounds like the belt pulley shaft.

The noise stays the same whichever way the clutch is adjusted and the clutch is strong. We suspected throwout bearing but wonder what ideas you might have before we take a long dive off a high bridge into shallow water.

I know this is one of those things that difficult to solve from afar but wondering what you think.

the noise could be as simple as too much timing. My Z makes a noise like what you're describing once I set the timing up around 36 degrees at idle.It's nothing more than gear noise from the crank and cam gears being a little worn. when I retard the timing the noise goes away.

You can check the release bearing by looking at it through the clutch hand hole, just remove the cover. You have geased it, haven't you? If no, then the grease fitting should be sticking right out toward you, its in one of the pins in the yoke. have a helper push the clutch handle back and forth, shouldn't be more than maybe a 1/16 of an inch before it pushes the sleeve that engages the clutch.
Also, be sure the forks that carry the release bearing aren't rubbing anything on the back of the clutch.
As far as the belt pulley goes, the only tractor I remember that had a terribly worn or out of mesh gearset on the belt pulley shaft made a kind of heavy ting ting ting sound only when the clutch was engaged and the transmission was turning. It had been power on a sawmill.

You can probably tell if you have too much gear clearance at the end of the belt pulley shaft. With the clutch engaged, you should not be able to turn the pulley much at all in either direction. By much I would think 4-5" around the pulley rim is way too much. Probably shouldn't be more than 2" total.

I believe you and kelvin are right. i would add try to move the pulley shaft up/down in and out and look for excess movement. try the same on clutch shaft/ through out

Well if you think it maybe the belt pulley then pull it out of the tractor, or at least that is what I would do and then run it and see if it still makes the noise. You make a make shift cover to put in place of the belt pulley out of plywood and an old inner tube for a gasket as a temporary cover and then see if you still hear it or not. I suspect you are on the right track with it and hearing the back lash of the two gears running. One question does it change when you are driving it around and engaging and disengaging the clutch?
