I am in the process of rebuilding the engine in a 2270 White with the 585 cid diesel motor. The tractor came to me in pieces and I am not sure which way the new pistons go in. There is a groove machined in the top of the piston that goes down into the bowl. The groove is offset and I think it should go towards the camshaft side of the engine but I am not sure. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

IT manuals do not give enough piston clearance in the bore spec. Be careful! These engine got a bad rap because they were rebuilt using bad numbers.

I agree with you MOPOWER,around 25 years ago I overhauled an Oliver 2155 it has 585ci. MM motor. We seized motor tight first day of use after overhaul, broke a couple pistons scoured walls. We had to boar out blocks more, give it more clearins I do not remember how much more. Hope this helps Larry.

I think you are correct, the groove should go toward the injectors. I am also rebuilding a 585 out of a G-1355 Moline. Are you doing all the updates to the engine while you are rebuildin it?? They also have a new kind of ring that goes on the pistons that helps the engine a lot, everlast it think is what they are called.

E-mail me if you have questions.

Be sure and bore and hone the sleeves looser than what any I&T book recogmends. Zollner gave quite different spec than I&T books. They seem to expand quite abit. Are your new pistons marked with 9143 on the under sides. Curious about these rings, I assume it is for the top groove. Do the new pistons have a steel insert for top groove or just an all aluminum piston?

Shep you must not have gotten my e-mail, We had a 2-150 we had problems the first week the man had it. I think they suggested 12 as the clearance. I am not at home but later on they issued a service bulletin on that clearance issue. I have a copy of the bulletin will be home Sunday.

OK guys how much clearence do you have to have on the bore over the pistons and where are you measuring it at.

The machine shop that did mine simply measured the bore agenst the pistons that it currently had in the unworn places, and then bored it 20 over. So mine "should" have the same clearence that it had from the factory with 20 over bore and pistons. But I am not sure what the bore is over the pistons without measuring it.
