Z engine noises

My Z engine seems to be making a loud knock noise at higher RPM's. It also appears that there may be fuel getting into the oil and I think a cylinder is not firing. I am guessing the noise is piston slap and resulting low compression. Does this diagnosis sound accurate?

Where do you get a rebuild kit for one of these engines. Are they hard to rebuild or at least "top". Thanks for looking.

Thanks for all the comments. I will get a compression tester on her first and then probably start pulling her apart. How hard is it to split the tractor? How do guys support the tractor when you split it? sorry for all the questions. But thanks for the help.

Could be a flat lobe on your camshaft. Makes your rocker arm knock against the cam and valve stem.

Another thing I have seen that made bad noises was a groove in the rocker arms where the camshaft wears into them.

I would check that front roller bearing. The Z tractors can make a knock just in their exhaust note, but a compression check would rule out a few things. Check your rocker arm to valve clearance.

I do not agree with kelvin on this one, grant it you have more than one thing wrong but your initial diagnose on the fuel getting into the oil is probably cylinder/piston failure the noise could be piston slap but i would check the bearings. a bent rod will also lower compression. Do a compression test first that will answer many questions. Many parts are available many places last i knew they were sold individually. since you got to tear it down do it right and completly rebuild the engine. (solve the valve problems at that time too)

I suggest you check your rod bearing clearances. If the clearance is over .003, they are out of spec.
The mains can knock too, especially if the front roller bearing is worn.

If you have a cylinder misfiring regularly, most times its a fouled plug or a burnt valve seat. A burnt exhaust valve seat can make a loud pop in the exhaust manifold. (Can also blow the manifold to pieces if its not pretty sound)

worn rings usually cause problems common to more than 1 cylinder.
