Can I just put an 8 volt battery on my ZAU? Will I have to put a resistor in for the 6volt coil or points? Do I have to turn the gen. up to 8 volts or will it work on 7.5? Thanks for any info.

I agree with the guys leave it 6 volt and use big cables. NAPA make a battery #5019L group 19L that is very close to a 2L. It has a few less cranking amps but it works well in Ohio winters and fits under the gas tank much better than a group 1.

I put an eight volt in a Farmall a number of years
ago and it worked just great, I had to set up the regulator a bit but it spun like a 12 volt. Did
the sme in a 49 studebaker truck, work just fine in it too.

Along these lines I am really having trouble locating a group 2L 6 volt battery. Does anyone know of company that makes them or where available?

An V battery replacement is usually resorted to by a lazy technician. IF you have a large enough cables, & IF your starter is good, & IF you have THOROUGHLY CLEANED ALL OF THE GROUND CONNECTIONS, then your 6 V will work just fine. Clean connections & VERY heavy cables are the most important.

I expect your reason for switching is slow cranking. My experience says to put your money in big cables and stay with 6 volt. I paralleled two 1 AWG (couldn't find 0 AWG or 00 AWG) on my 1952 Ford car and now the V8 spins like it is on 12 volt. Two 1 AWG are equivalent to 000 AWG. The previous owner had 8 volt on it with the wrong cables so it still didn't start good. But the 8 volt system wrecked half of my gauges and nearly everything else electrical. If you are going to change (I recommend better cables and stay 6 volt), go all the way to 12 and make all the fixes to the electrical system.

It has been mentioned many times but once more can't hurt. A 6 volt system requires twice the amperage of a 12 volt, USE HEAVY BATTERY CABLES! cables that are to light guage will cause slow cranking. good luck

Chris, I normally hang out over on the JD board but was here cruising. Im NOT a fan of 8 volt systems cuz if youre gonna convert anyway and want her to start a lot stronger, go ahead and convert to 12 volts. The VR would have to be recalibrated to work the best at 8 volts,,,,, ,you should run a series external ballast ahead of the coil to reduce the coils input voltage to around 6 to avoid premature points burn up plus not overheat the coil.

MM had a service bulletin on this very thing. They did not recommend doing it. It will raise havoc with your electrical system.

Why would you want to go with a 8 volt battery in the first place??? And yes you would need to do things with the reg and maybe put a resistor in line with the coil. Why not just stay with 6 volts or if you need to upgrade to 12 votls instead of not going the right way
