OK you've told me my mag probably heas a bad coil. Thank you. Now once you install a new coil is there an easy way to time the rotor to the armature? Don't see any marks on the gears. Thanks again

This will take some thinking, as I don't know which mag you have and my experience with magnetos is limited.
But basically, you want the contact on the rotor to point towards one of the plug wire contacts in the cap when the points are just beginning to open as the rotor shaft turns in the correct direction it rotates on the tractor.

One thing: I always use a small adjustable wrench when I turn the rotor, it saves fingers when the impulse snaps.

I took apart a spare first, on the tractor I will set it @ #1 TDC and mark rotor position to make it easy. Thought there might be a rule of thumb that worked on the bench for accurate timing thanks

Wico mags had a mark line on dist. rotor that lines up with beveled teeth on magnet rotor gear and some have a window in cap to line up rotor mark to #1 on cap. Fairbanks Morse mags have a C or A mark on the dist. rotor gear and for the Z CW drive mag you would line up the C mark with a dot or beveled tooth on other gear. On Bosch mags a C or A mark also and would line up the C mark with keyway in other gear. If still confused email me with mag brand and number.
