In 5th, a collar on the input (clutch) shaft lines up with splines on the pinion shaft and locks them together. Everything else in there just spins.
If your pinion shaft bearings are loose, or the ring/pinion gear tooth contact is off, that might be the problem.

I've always just lived with it.

I believe that is a characteristic of the ZA"s. My dad"s does the same, mine somewhat also. He always said it was the large bull gears clanging, and he bought it new. It always did it when starting out low or around a corner, and when you speed up it disappears...and my dad knew everything...at least that"s what I think.

My ZA and ZB make the same noise, at low rpm or rounding a corner. I suppose there is some play and the gears clash at bit. I have learned to live with it.

Explain more about the fifth gear. Is the tractor gear-train loud in fifth gear? Is it loud all of the time or does it get better when the tractor catches up and the load is taken off? Or else, is it loud when you try to engage the clutch?

Hi: It seems to be the loudest when accelerating at low speed. It seems to quite down when it is traveling along without a load. It doesn't grind, Just sounds loose. It came in 3rd out of 8 in a low gear antique pull last night. Jerry

Just trying to diagnose this as well, since I have the same symptoms in my ZTU that was given to me in running condition. Mine makes a gra-gra gra-gra noise until the tractor overcomes the transmission, or the other way around. I'll try to look into it some more. Please post back if you figure out what it is. :-)

Thanks
