my 445 has developed a problem that has me stumped. when i back up the tractor to hook up to something and get off, the oil for the steering starts coming out of the vent hole on top of the steering sector under the radiator. it will do this as long as the tractor sets there and runs, if i start moving again it will stop. the power steering in this tractor is not great, generally need two hands to turn the wheel, but i also have a loader on this tractor and right now the front tires are 235/15 car tires so i'm guessing my hard steering is due to the extra load of the laoder and the wider tires. how "easy" should the steering actually work on one of these and what can i look at to fix the oil coming out of the vent hole.
thanks,,,,Gary

I think you have A leak in spool valve in the actuator valve. When you move the stering wheel this valve directs oil to the piston in frontpart of housing. This valve is also bolted to this housing where the stering shaft joins. It has two lines. One is preasure the other is a return. If the spool is leaking into the housing it may be scored. This may be part of your hard stering problem.

It sounds like you have 2 problems. The oil coming out the top of the steering gear points to bad seals in the steering ram. the steering ram is in the very front of the steering gear housing, is basically 2 hydraulic cylinders with a rack gear connecting them that turns the sector. The sector housing is supposed to have its own supply of gear oil. It is checked and filled by a fill plug on the right side of the housing, if I am not mistaken.

But the fact that you have pressure there when you aren't operating (steering) the tractor leads me to believe you somehow have pressure (Or at least too much pressure) on both sides of the steering ram when you shouldn't. When it works right, there is no pressure on those rams until you turn the steering wheel.

I've never had one of those valves completely apart, so I'm guessing that you may have a cut o-ring or something else wrong in there.

The first thing I would do is connect a pressure gauge to the pipe plug on the back of the valve and see how much pressure I had there.

Those valves are pushed/pulled back and forth by a brass finger that fits a groove in the steering worm shaft. If that brass finger is a good fit (almost a drag fit) in the groove and the end play on the worm shaft is adjusted properly, it should have fairly good power steering.

I was thinking about this last night. Have you split the tractor recently and Is there any chance you have the hydraulic hoses crossed at the bellhousing?
