Camshaft play

Am rebuilding a '41 UTU, and wondering how much play there should be in the camshaft before replacing the gear cover. I have found the info for adjusting the screw in the gear cover once it's attached, but am wondering how much 'slack' I should feel in the camshaft right now.
Thanks for any help.

With the cover off, I think you can probably pull the cam and gear forward far enough to drop the tappets off on the rear side of the lobes. It could come all the way out if the tappets didn't hit the next lobe on the cam. That is why there is no clearance spec until after the cover is on.
