I just bought a 66 M670 Super and it pops out of third gear. They tell me that it needs a detent ball and spring put in. Can this be done without splitting the tractor. Looking in the MM service manual it looks like you need to slide the shift rod backwards out of the transmission case? Didn't know if anyone has done this or not. Let me know.

Nevermind, fixed it by trial and error. If anyone ever does this, rig up something so the detent ball will not fall into differential while pushing it down to clear the shaft. I had to sacrifice my .005 feeler gage. Luckily the ball came out with the oil and fished it out of the bucket with magnet.
