coming off my hydraulic reservoir at wher i think the fill plug is supposed to be ther is a small metal tank about the size of a 2 litre bottle and i am wondering what it is or does

My UTU has an aux hydraulic tank pipe up like you describe. The fitting the top of the tank says "Stewart Warner" and "Vacuum Reservoir" - obviously it was added by the PO.

However on mine the tank is connected to the reservoir only with a small (1/4") tube - no way it would flow enough to handle an oversize cylinder. Suspect rather it was a "band aid" added to provide a couple quarts of extra reservoir capacity to compensate for a slow leak somewhere.

It sure would help to know what model tractor. Assuming your tractor is a late R, a Z, ZA ZB U, UB or G series, that tank was probably added to increase the fluid capacity of the system. The regular reservoir is fine for the standard 8 or 10" stroke cylinder, but might not have enough capacity for a loader, especially if the cylinders are single-acting.

You didn't mention what tractor. I'm assuming that what you are talking about is the canister for your hydraulic filter.
