401 GMC V6 piston questions

Got a friend that asked me about these pistons for his mm..Told him that Ive heard very little about them but they have been used..I dont know if he can get them new..Ive tried to talk him outta it but cant,told him bout everetts,ross etc,etc..can anyone tell me so i can tell him the draw backs bout this setup he wants? Maybe if he reads this hell change his mind or maybe thell work..I just dont know..also where can he get them ...hes pretty stuck on these...Steve

The truth is I don't know.

I know the v-6 305 are pistons are similar to a Z. I can't remember, either the compression height-the distance from the center of the piston pin to the top of the piston- or the pin diameter itself is the killer. Your friend needs to find a piston parts book with this info in it if he is really serious about using the GMC pistons.

The other thought is you might just be trading the cost of the correct oversize pistons for the cost of machine work to make the GMC pistons fit the Z engine.

Unless you have access to some good used GMC pistons, It might be best to use the piston made for the job.
