I HAVE A ALTERNATOR ON MY 5 STAR, IT IS A HEAVY DUTY MODEL, THE GUY AT THE REBUILD SHOP TOLD ME THAT IT WAS VERY EXPENSIVE TO WORK ON, I WAS THINKING ABOUT GETTING A CHEAP GM MODEL FROM AUTO ZONE, BUT I WAS NOT SURE THAT IT WOULD BE WORTH IT, ANY BODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS. THANKS

the alternator that is on there right now is only pulling 15amps, i am going to keep it because the guy at the eletrical shop said i had a rare one, and one of these days i might want repair it, but this restoration has already cost me more than i wanted to spend, everyoe says that tractors are the cheepest thing to restore, and they are till you buy the tires

That heavy duty alternator lasted over 40 years, I think that kind of service justifies repair. If you must change it, I still wouldn't let it go. Someone, (perhaps you) may want to eventually restore the tractor. Five star's are becoming more popular.

have had problems with alternators from Advance and Auto Zone. 1 had belt problems (Rebuilt alt. did not have worn-out pulley replaced.) 1 had regulator problems. (My truck and my car)
I would suggest a 1 wire alternator from NAPA. If you turn your old alternator in, DON'T send the pulley. You probably will need to install it on your new alternator, because your M5 probably runs a wider belt than most cars.
Its real easy to hook up. just run a wire from the red post on the alternator to the opposite side of the ammeter from the battery wire.

The newer MMs and older Whites came with the GM alternators and you can get them cheap and also with a lot of amps for the price.

Get one from a salvage yard, Get a GM with internal Regulator. Is there a gen or a alt on there now.
