Foaming ZTU

My nicely restored 41 ZTU is foaming from the radiator. I tried swapping the head with new gaskets and I loosened the cylinders for alighnment and no better. My next thought was to apply air pressure to each cylinder and watch radiator for bubbles(yes make sure valves are closed) My question is, while messing with this I opened the petcock on the lower radiator hose to lower water level with engine running and the radiator really overflowed from air in system, can air be sucked into system someother way like through the water pump? Thanks for your ideas.

checked everything today, air test good, water pump is new, flushed and filled with clean water and all is well. Will try new thermostat asap Thanks again

I just had my ZTU doing the same thing. I still use mine for planting and spraying on my little 22 acers farm. So I had to fix it quick. I found the flues in my radiator were almost all stopped up. I think since the coolant was pumped into the top of the radiator faster than it could excape down the stopped up flues, and it"s not a pressurized system it developed some strange and differant symptoms. Symptoms that we are not use to seeing with pressurised cooling systems of today. When I found a very good radiator and installed it the foaming problem went away. I"m glad too, I love my Girl

Thanks for all the input now to find the time to do all this. I will fix it NOW so I can show it without being ashamed. Had hoped to be in Callicoon NY tractor parade this weekend (300 tractors last year) but doesn't look good.

Don't forget to check the baffle plate in the water pump. If that thing is rusted out the pump will cavitate.

I would suggest putting a thermostat in it. On an M-5 I had, without a thermostat to slow the water flow down, the action of the water pump would foam my anti-freeze. Try this, remove the coolant completely and flush the system with fresh water. Fill with water only. Run it and see if you get any foam or bubbles. If not, put a thermostat in it (drill a small hole in the t-stat so you get some bypass) and see if things are OK. If so, then go back to an anti-freeze solution.

What is the temperature gauge doing during all this? I have had ROTTEN luck with NAPA thermostats. For a while, they would only last 6 months in my UTU, I finally got one to last 2 years, and last week -- foam and water out of the radiator, then when the thermostat finally does open, temperature drops to nothing.. So.. I don't have an answer for you, but am very interested to hear what everybody else says.

I don't have a thermostat in it at this time and since it is a 41 it has no temperature guage
