445 steering problem

I had some responses on this problem-- thanks I still have the same problem. I jacked the front up an turned the wheel from side to side it turned hard to one side . When I started the motor the wheel turned freely on its own to the side that the wheels were turned to slightly past center , it would not come back I had to stop the motor and force the wheel back to the other side. it would turn freely once past center it hang up once or twice on the way . when I started the motor the same thing . it went on its own . so whats next I am stumped

You may have more problems than this will correct but the first thing you need to do is center the steering valve spool on the control valve. An I&T manual describes how to do it. That should fix the problem of it want to turn one way by itself. The problem with it turning hard in some spots may mean a bad bearing, little or no 80-90 grease in the housing and/or rusty gears in the front housing.

I overhauled the tractor over the winter I did not unhook anything to the steering but the lines to the power steering pump when I hooked it backup I had steering for a little bit then it started to get hard to steer the resevior is full of oil the lines are right but no steering

I created a similar problem with a 445 after putting in a new clutch. I had separated the hyd lines to the steering when I split the tractor. On re assembly, my steering self powered, full hard left and reacted similar to what you discribed. I switched the 2 lines around (correctly) and it worked fine. My two cents and good luck.

thanks for your imput but on my tractor one line is longer then the other where they hook together no way to hook up wrong . I was fulling around with the tractor today , I left the front end up off the ground an let the motor run at about 3/4 throtle for alittle while I was putting new chains on the 3 point arms and worked the hydraulic up and down 3 or 4 times hen when I turned the wheel it worked just fine I dont know if this had any thing to do with it or not but is working . thank every one for your help .
