ZTU Light Switches

On my 1938 ZTU there are two light switches. The one on the left seems to be just a one position on-off switch. The one on the right side of the dash has two positions. (I guess you could say that it has three, all the way in, middle, all the way out.) Did the left switch run all the lights, or just the rear work light? This may seem kind of dumb but could someone please explain to me how the two switches worked. I have read something in a past post that one of the switches was how the battery was charged. Is this right? Also for a kill switch did this tractor use a push pull switch or did it still use the magneto ground knife switch? I am trying to finish restoring this tractor for my grandpa for his birthday in mid June. This is one of the last things I have to do, so any help would be GREAT! Thanks in advance. KPL

First off, I hope you get the time to finish your restoration as I have my grandfather's 1940 ZTU I am getting back to working on, although he is not around to see it. Good luck in that sense. According to the operator's (maintenance) manual, the left switch "when pulled out, it switches the fender light on." The right switch "when this switch button is pulled back to the first position, it increases the generator charge to the battery. When pulled out to the next position (all the way out), it switches on the head and dash lights." Your machine will have come standard with or without battery/lights/generator/etc with the "knife switch." Simply stated "when the knife switch is opened, it opens the ground circuit of the magneto for running the engine. When it closes it grounds and short circuits the magneto for stopping the engine."

Wow, was unaware that there were different switches on the early Z's. I've got a mid 40's model, has the ignition switch on the left and the light switch on the right with off-high charge-low beam-high beam (makes for three positions out).

I went digging through all my light switches for the ZTU and I do have (2) of my (4) headlight switches are 4 position and the others are 3-position. I never want to tell anyone they don"t know what they have because look what I found in my own lot...haha

My ZTU is a mid 1940 also serial number 568031. I have done my best to restore it piece by piece according to the serial number breakdowns in the parts book. When I got to the electrical portion (as mine is still the original crank start, as was purchased by my grandfather, but will have the electrical added before the restoration is complete), I purchased all NOS switches and they lined up with what the parts book said. Being only 29 and a young pup, I will never tell anyone they are wrong because I have been around long enough to know there is always an exception to the rule and have seen not only Moline but also Farmall do some very interesting things. If it works for ya, no need to change it unless you want to. By the way, do both your head and your rear light come on at the same time?

Yes, they all come on at the same time.

What does your part's book show for a switch?

I'm pretty sure that my switch is an MM switch by looking at it's design, and it has the original knob. Hmmm....

My NOS switch that I have is Delco Remy part number 1994011 and MM number UT2374. According to the ZT parts book, its the only one listed and it is a 3 position (in-mid-out) switch. After reading all that I can find on it in my books (service/operator's/parts), the front and rear lights are supposed to be wired independently of each other from the factory. However, is it possible that at one time the lights were wired together and then the rear light switch became the on/off magneto ground switch as to replace the knife switch? Makes me wonder as it is pretty interesting and once again, I will never tell you you are wrong because this is what you get into when dealing with older machines...If you give me your email, I will attempt to scan the pages of the parts manual for you and send them via email.
