My Z gets hot when working it. Is ok with out any load. Cools down pretty quick when I stop.

Pulled off the head: the piston shows above the bore about 1/4", can just push a piece of 1/16" flat steel in between the top of the piston and the bottom of the valves; it"s bored to 3.75".

I didn"t check compression before pulling the head. Could it be high enough to cause the overheating? If so what can I do to reduce the compression?

I friend of mine had a Z that would run hot when he used it, such as warm days or doing a little plowing. He tried many things as mentioned already , and then he removed the blocks and found the water jackets full of rust and junk. He cleaned that out-problem solved

Lets think other things besides compression. does your water pump have a good baffle? They don't pump properly without it. Is your radiator clean? No kinked hoses? Did you take out the thermostat? Some engines depend on the restriction of the thermostat to slow the water velocity so that it actually has time to cool in the radiator. If you put a car thermostat in, it needs a 1/8" weep hole drilled in it. Otherwise it will overheat on startup. Your radiator does still have the fan shroud, doesn't it?

One last question about your piston/block clearance. You did install a gasket between the block and the crankcase, didn't you?
Lastly but not leastly: I'm assuming with 3-3/4 bore you have aluminum pistons. The machine shop that bored your blocks did allow for the extra expansion of the aluminum pistons, didn't they? The factory piston skirt clearance spec is for cast iron pistons, if I am not mistaken.

Yep, yep and yep. Fought some of those problems on mine. Discovered pump baffle was rusted out, bought one from Everett's, installed, still ran hot. Discovered no thermostat, bought one at NAPA, installed, then it would get really hot -220� or so - and puke out the overflow when the thermostat opened. Drilled .125" bypass hole in the thermostat, problem solved.

Don't know which head is on it, figure it's a RE226C, there are heads which will decrease the compression. An A, D, or E will do that.
