Hydrostatic Steering Jet Star 3 with 220A-4

I have been helping restore a Jet Star 3 with a 220A-4 engine that has been rebuilt.

The hydrostatic pump gets extremely hot within a couple of minutes of running. The steering works, all be it a little stiff. I disassembled the manifold from the back of the pump. Extremely clean with the relief valve and control valve in perfect condition. The same with the maifold body.

My question is:
The relief valve has 6 shims installed that are used to control the pressure that is relieved. If I take shims out, will that reduce the operating pressure?

Thanks!

Hello I just bought a jet star 3 and when I hooked up my disc to it the hydralics got very hot. I talked to the local MM dealer said to check a few things out like oil type, clean, and flush hydro system. I still got hot hydro pump. So I removed the valve section of the hydro the lift 3-point levers I found that some one before me had the master spool valve in backwards i turned it around and guess what no more hot hydro pump, filter, valves.Make sure all springs are in right also!!

Steve,
I read your message on the MF board.
If by no other accessories installed, you mean that there is no hydraulic system (control valves etc) on the tractor, what is the bigger port (that should go to the hydraulic system control valve) connected to now?

The hydraulic system on this tractor is an open center. The relief valve for the hydraulic system is located in the control valve for the hydraulic system. The relief valve only works when a control valve is held open. The rest of the time the oil free flows back to the resevoir.
If the outlet on the priority valve that should go to the the hydraulic system is blocked off, there is no where for the flow in excess of that diverted for the steering to go & the pump would get hot quickly.

John

Thanks for the reply:
Pump Manifold-
Small port pressure(?) to steering control valve pressure in.
Large Port return (?) from steering control valve return out.

I have tee'd off from return to resevoir (to have excess flow return to resevoir hopefully cooling) since writing. Seems to be better. But should pump be uncomfortably hot to touch?

This Jet Star was bought 15 years ago by my future son-in-laws father, and has sat until I took it on about 2 weeks ago. Of course his dad had disassembled with parts all over the place (laughing!I love him!). The engine has been rebuilt (bored over, new pistons, rings, etc.) Starts and runs better than my new pickup!

I bought a shop manual, since this will be a working farm tractor (plow/baling/tedding) and realize the pump is rated for 13+ gpm and the steering uses about 2.5 gpm when active.

Eventually want to add a two point hitch to run off hydraulics.

Must work on "sensitive" governor next.

Thanks for the help. Also have gotten a Massey-Harris running that's on e-bay. The farm uses ALL used vintage equipment in working order and my "son-in-law" left a corporate job 4-5 years ago to make a run at vegatables/hay and is keeping his nose above water (extremely farm oriented mindset!!!)
Have a great day!
