ZTU tire size?

I have an early ZTU with Mag and hand crank. What width tires were put on 36" rims when new?
Tires that are on now are 9.6-36 and look small but look brand new.

Actually, those original rims are 6" wide, if I remember correctly. By today's measurements, an 8.2-36 or a 7.2-36 would probably be a better fit IF they were available. I've got 9.2-36's on my '38 ZTU also. That's the smallest tire width that is currently available.

Tractor tire sizes have been changed three times over the years. There was an explaination in Miller Tire's catalog.

Also, your rims are 1-1/4" lip. Tires intended for later 1" lip rims look a little odd where the rim and tire touch.

That size would be correct for that time period. Modern equivalent would be a 11.2 x 36. I believe that was the tire size that the Nebraska test was run on in 1940.

I restored a 1937 ZTU a few years ago. Originally I bought new 9.5 X 36's for it, but they looked way too small, and made the rear end of the tractor sit lower than the front. This bugged me, and as I was restoring the tractor, a freind of mine came up with a nice pair of old Goodrich Silvertown 11 X 36's(these are called 12.4 X 36 now days). They look great and leveled the tractor out. I would go with at least a 11.2 X 36 myself.
