I have been looking for a 1937-1939 MM ztu for some time and have found one. Problem is it won't start! Turns over well but no spark. Sheet metal is great and the paint is good.
What would the worst case cost be if the mag is shot?
What is this tractor worth?

Cost depends on which mag. it has. If its a FMJ, I put coil/points/condenser in one a year ago for under $100.
If its an older style,(I know some had the type where there were 4 carbon slippers in the cap-1 for each plug wire.) some parts are not available, but sometimes another part can substitute. You need to talk to a good magneto repairman.

If your ZT has full electrics-here's what I did:
I got a distribuitor with gear reduction off a Farmall Cub. and installed it in the magneto hole on my ZT. The drive tang on the reduction gear had to be filed down to fit the ZT drive flange.
I put all new points, condenser and cap on it and wired the tractor for battery ignition. It did take some trial and error to get the timing right, but it was worth the effort. (And I didn't have a magneto at all to start with.)

The reason I used the Farmall distribuitor is the oil pump/magneto shaft turns at crankshaft speed and you need to gear down to 1/2 crankshaft speed for a distribuitor to work right.

Another alternative is to change out the gears on the crankshaft and oil pump/magneto shaft to get the correct distribuitor drive ratio and use a regular MM distribuitor.

Long story short-there are several options and I wouldn't walk away from the tractor just because the magneto has no fire.

The newer Z series had distributors and so did the Rs, they will fit on the same crankcase.

Can you hear the impulse coupler snap? If you can then pull the cap off of the mag and run a dollar bill through the points. If that doesn't work file the points, then run a dollar bill through them. Can't help you with any of the other stuff.
