starter on a 445

Is there a special procedure in installing a starter on a 445. I lined up the tapered pointed screw in the hole in the starter. I just can't seem to get the gear in the flywheel and starter to mesh correctly, all the time. It will make the most horrible sound one time, and start like a charm the next.
Is there any special tip I can do or am I lining up something wrong?

When it starts to make that terrible sound, stop and take off the starter, chances are, you'll see bad ring gear teeth there or about 4-7 inches from there. The cure will be a new ring gear. If the starter was to blame, it'd happen every time. Do it now, before the ring gear ruins the starter drive.

If the ring gear teeth are square cut, you might be able to heat it, take it off and put it back on backwards. This would put an un-worn face of the teeth toward the starter drive.

If it has slant teeth, you might also be able to get by heating the gear, removing it and installing it 90 degrees from its present position.

This should put good teeth in the areas the engine is most likely to come to rest at, as an engine in good condition usually stops with one cylinder on compression.

When you take the bolt out push the starter in as far as it will go your wholes will not line up mark on the starter and drill a new hole it only has to be an small big enough to hold the bolt. make sure the starter is thight against the housing
