Hello , I am having problems with the pto packing in my 54 utu.I replaced it last year, it is already leaking. I tryed to tighten it, but it will not stop leaking. I didn"t think that I locked it down to tight when I installed it, but I might have. I wrapped it in the direction of rotation, guess I"ll order another from agco. What is the proper way to install one? thanks JDC

Thanks for the ideas guys, I was thinking that there was probably something else that I could use. I will try to find some packing on my own, instead of ordering through agco. I also might go ahead and change transmission oil. What do you think of flushing with kerosene, will it hurt older seals? I guess it shouldn't. Also is straight 140 still available, I don't see it around anymore.Guess I'll use multi weight if not

KEROSINE FLUSH in reply to JDC, 04-19-2005 19:08:39
JDC IF YOUR SEALS ARE NOT LEAKING AND EVERYTHING IS PRETTY MUCH OK THEN I WOULD WARM HER UP GOOD AND DRAIN FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND PASS ON THE KEROSINE. THEY MAKE AN 80W140 THAT WILL WORK JUST FINE.

I WOULD USE KEROSINE AS A LAST RESORT FOR A GOOEY NASTY MESS AND ONLY THEN A 50/50 MIX OF 90 WEIGHT AND KEROSINE.

MM STEVE,I think your right. When I fix the packing again, I will warm it up and let it drain real good and pass on the flush out. I will use the 80 w 140. I have some other leaks to fix, then I'd like to clean her up and paint her.Good old tractor, hard to beat the old molines!

Go to your local Oil Field Supply store. Ask for 12 inches of Teflon coated packing that goes around the pump rod on a well head. Lots cheaper than Agco and will last longer. What I ussually get is 1/2 inch square. It has to be cut down the middle so it will fit. Save what is left and hope you can find it later.

You might try putting some faucet packing string in there with what you got. Just put a few turns in there behind what's already in there. I put some on Daddy's ZB and it worked O.K. a few years.

What worked even longer-About 20 years ago an old mechanic pulled the inner fibers from a Buick rear main seal-the rope type. Then he stretched the graphite coated outer shell as long as he could. I put that in there and it lasted about 10 years.
