Hi, I have a '66 U302 gas and the govenor is just not working right. I need some advice. I have little or no "governed rpm" . When using the tractor, I'll step in the clutch and the engine will race ahead. If this was my old Z I'd just pull the govenor out and try another one but you can"t do it with this tractor. I have adjusted the linkages according to the I&T manual, every seems OK with no binding. Could the carb. adjustments be so far off to cause this? I need carb work too, but don't think it is causing it to race ahead. The manual calls for removing the rad. etc. to remove the front pully to get at the govenor. Anything I should check before I go that route?

Brian, DO NOT run this engine except with extreme caution, very bad things can happen. We stock new governors for these engines, call anyone for one and do not hesitate. Our number here is 920 295 3278 or email with a number where you can be reached, [email protected]. We just finished a tractor that wasn"t fixed soon enough, you don"t want to see that, Dale

I have a U302 apart right now to work on the governor. You don't need to drain the radiator.
Just remove both lower front side panels, remove the 2 bolts on each side that bolt the radiator mount to the frame rails, jack up the engine so the wheels are light on the floor (I used a splitting stand under the engine) and pry the front casting forward about 2 inches. There is pelnty of room to get the front pulley off and the cover and governor out. The hoses arn't even strained. On the one I have apart, the pulley was loose so the governor wasn't turning with the crank & therefore not working correctly. The pulley holding the governor tight against the crank is the only thing that holds it.

The governor not workng and allowing the engine to rev wildly is a primary cause for blowing these engines.

Thanks for the advice. I removed the govenor today. A mechanic suggested removing the 4 bolts in front of the engine and the 4 at the end of the rails and rolling the front forward. He said the radiator could stay on but I removed it because I didn't want something to go wrong and put a hole in a good one. I was suprised at how easy it came off. I moved it ahead about 1 foot. I had to use a puller to get the pully off. Sure isn't much to that govenor. I don't know, whats wrong with it, will wait and see until I get a new one. The bearing balls run in a groove and there is a little chunk broke off where the fork is. If this is original, after 6000 hours somethings going to give. I also learned that the connection between the govenor shaft and that flat arm are just pressed together and they have been known to get loose. I'll give KLS a call and hope they have one. I am going to replace the seal and gasket too , is there anything else I should do?

Brian,
If I remember correctly, the flat arm is welded to the governor shaft. What does work loose sometimes is the setscrew that holds the yoke for the governor to the shaft. Since you have the governor out, you can shck to see if it is loose on the shaft. The setscrew is on the back side of the yoke so you would have to remove the side cover to get to it. Make sure that you get the bolt that holds the front plley and governor on the crank tight so the governor is held securely in place to rotate with the crank.

It's not a bad job, just finished a 445 (same set-up) Drain coolant, loosen gen or alt, take rad hoses off, lift with floor jack under eng & BLOCK it. Take out 4 nuts holding front end to eng, support front end & roll it ahead. Pull cs pulley & seal retainer. There it is!!! Replace shaft bushings & shaft seal also. Took about 4 hours. Welters has the parts as probably many others.

Brian take it apart and see what is wrong before it runs away and breaks itself.
