Unfortunately my father passed away last july

he left behind a few old tractors and parts-which I am trying to sort thru-and get running again

i believe one is a moline u-which is complete--but the serial plate is steel-and have had trouble raising the serial numbers

i also have two carcasses-which i dont know if anything is useful on or not--one still has rear end attached--both were left outside-engines are gone--though I've found assorted heads-pistons-and such

as the interior surfaces have rusted-am wondering if any of this stuff is usable-or should just salvage the wheels and scrap the rest???

also have a 69 M670--serial for the frame says it should have a diesel engine--it doesnt-has gas engine--plate for serial number on engine confirms it is same year--is this unusual???--doesn't look as if there was an engine swap

to date have gotten his 63 case 841 going-as well as a newer 96 belarus-the molines are proving tougher

my father was not much of a mechanic-for that matter-neither am i-but promised myself would try to get these puppies running again

any comments-pointers-would be appreciated

Henry,
Sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. It seems like several people who post on this board have lost parents or grandparents and then restored that person's old tractor as a memorial of sorts, or just a momento of that person. I can't think of a better motive.
I did it for a lesser reason. I bought a property about 10 years ago that had some old junk vehicles on it including a 1947 MM UTS that they said had not moved since the early 1970s. I decided to restore it "because it was there" and I hated to see it getting rustier and more decrepid as the years went by. I am just finishing the mechanical parts of restoration (well...more accurately I am just finishing paying for the restoration since I am living out of the country and have had to farm out the work). I plan to paint it this summer when I am home. In all honesty, I have spent more restoring it than it would ever sell for, but again money was never the motive. I will feel good just having saved it from the scrap heap. I will also find some work for it to do. Some tips... Don't throw any parts out. If you can't use them someone else probably can. Be patient as you look for any replacement parts. I spent a fair amount unnecessarily (Had my radiator re-cored, then later saw a NOS radiator for sale for 1/2 the price, etc., etc.) Be brave about starting. These things are relatively simple. Repair manuals, parts and free advice are readily available. Good luck! Keep us posted.
