I want to get a MM model U tricyle general purpose type tractor....just a plain model U. What's the major differences between the early styled types with the slotted style grill and the later ones that more or less look the same but have the clamshell type fenders and the double two cylindered engine blocks. No, I don't want a UB or a UTS standard...just an ordinary U. Thanks to anyone who will give me this information on this site

Sincerely,

Elden Denning, aka The Dukester

There weren't a LOT of changes. The U series was one of MMs best sellers and had a long production run ('39-'53?). There were, of course, some sheet metal and grill changes but I believe the drive train remained largely unchanged. The change from the KEF (one piece block) engine to the 2-piece occurred in mid 1947. There was also some choice involving a high-compression head. (I don't recall all of the specifics of that).

I understand that the early Us had a bit higher 5th gear than the later Us. (No, not the 40 mph., but a bit faster than the later U's.)

The split block engine had more options for cylinder heads. Its the choice if you are going to pull it.

When you say slotted grille, are you talking about the 'Red face' tractors? they used the KEC engine. It has about the same dimensions as the later tractors, but uses different crank bearings from the later U's.

Kelvin, no, I'm talking about the later ones with the horizontal slots or louvers in the grill, I understand the "red face" discription too, that's the early ones with the sort of mesh grill dating back to the '30's...right?

Thanks a Lot,

Yes, the red face tractors were made in '39 and '40 and Maybe '41. I'm not sure when the change to the later styling was made.
