After purchasing my Z, I have noticed at tractor events that some Z's of the same year and model could be painted yellow or orange. When the owners of these tractors are asked about the colour they have indicated that the tractor was purchased in that colour or had been repainted the original colour.

Is it possible there are 2 authentic colours and if so can anyone tell me why?

Thanks for the information.

Dennis

Dennis, I posed a similar question on the site some time ago and really received no satisfactory response.
I have a couple of books that mention the color change. The Peterson/Beemer book notes that sometime in '47 (or '48?) the color was changed to a more orangish shade. About this same time the first referrences were made to "Prairie Gold" in advertising copy.
I have a '47 UTS that is faded and appears to have been repainted a long time ago, however when I disassembled it and looked inside protected areas (tool box under the dash) it appears to have originally been a more sedate shade of yellow.
I am going to repaint it this summer and plan to take a piece with what appears to be original color to a paint store and ask them to match it, rather than use the later, orangish, Prairie Gold.

The short term answer no one really knows the true shade of Prairie Gold and a long story behind that one. But I can tell while "z"'s where built there was only on shade.
