UTIL rear axle question

Thinking i broke both rear axles but only the left side is broke, the right side appears to be fine. when i turn the right axle with the tractor out of gear everything turns except the main pinion gear. when i put the tractor in gear the pinion gear turns.(this is my first tractor don"t know much about these rear axles)with only one axle broke the tractor should still move right?? It won"t budge i will fix the left side axle but i don"t understand why the tractor won"t move with just one axle. When i fix the left axle and it still won"t move what else could it be.Hope i"m not busten my knuckles for nothin.

without lengthy tutorial that is the way a differential works. If one axle is free to turn and one not the gear cluster will spin around the stationary axle and the free side will spin twice as fast. Probably one new axle will fix it, but I would check for pieces in bottom of housing (magnet) and probably drain and flush, I know that darn thing holds a lot of oil. Done That! Good Luck sms

If one or the other axle is free to turn, the tractor will not move! More exploratory surgery is required to find out what's going on in there. Good news for you is that as long as you have the time and facilities, parts should be easily obtained.
