Ok guys. I'm working on this blame M5 I got cheap. Torc lever was locked ahead. Engine was stuck. Tore down engine and want to get to bottom of the torc too. If I put it in gear and turn the fan with lever in high, tractor crawls ahead. Snaps over center fine and feels good. Drop it back to low and do the same thing and it does move the tractor some but hold the fan and watch the tractor slowly move back. Low has to be slipping. I took the cover off and can watch it move. The clutches I see are only for high, right? Where is the clutches or what is worn that lets it slip in low. I tried to find something in a shop manual that covers early 1000s but I don't see what I need there either. What am I missing?

I'm not sure you can check the T/A other than visual without running tractor. If you are sailing down the road in hi 5th and try to slow down by pulling into lo 5th you are either going to overshoot the intersection or roll the tractor if you try the turn.They free wheel in low. If a T/A is good, and you are pulling a load in Hi and start to power out, pull back to low and you will have instant gear reduction and power recovery with no slip.

I wonder if what you are witnessing is related to a caution that is in my M670 owners manual about not using low range on the TA when pulling a load down hill. The warning made reference to a ratching action in the TA that would allow the tractor to free wheel.

There is a one way sprag clutch used for the low side. Usually the surface they grip gets warn and they no longer function correctly. You'll have to dissasemble the T/A and look at the surface of the shaft the rollers ride on for wear.

Thanks guys for trying to help me. I know about the free-wheeling of these types in low. I have some vista's and a 900 but never had to work on the torc. This one doesn't act right and the fact that the owner had blocked the lever so you couldn't pull it back makes you beleive it wasn't right either. If I want to check it over for wear, etc. I will have to split the tractor and remove the torc as a unit?? Is that correct?Then disassemble the components on the sprag clutch. Other than the normal things is there anything I need to watch for or do to get the unit out or will I need to wait to get a manual?

Thanks for the info. I bought a book today on e-bay and will probably take your advice and send the thing to Welters when I get it out. I have had good luck with them on rapairs in the past.
