I recently purchased a 1966 Jet Star 3 Super. The lady that I got it from said it had a hydraulic leak.her son cranked it up a few years back and told here that it was in need of hydraulic fluid and parked it back in the barn.It isn't running now and when I turn the steering wheel the front wheels don't move.Is this normal?i need it to steer so I can bet it out of the barn and out in the open to get it winched up on the trailer.Does antbody know the cause of this and a way I can get it to steer?Any help or advice would be appreciated.Thanks.
Dale

Dale,
Yes this is normal for 1966 and newer Molines equipped with hydrostatic steering. There is only a hydraulic fluid connection between the steering wheel and front wheels - no mechanical linkage. Usually you can get the front end to turn some by turning the wheel quite a bit and I mean a lot. Sometimes it helps if the tractor is rolling. But since you mentioned a possible loss of hydraulic fluid you may not be able to get the wheels to turn at all. The system only works correctly if the engine is running and providing hydraulic pressure.

The valve that is supposed to hold fluid in the steering circuit apparrently allowed it back to the reservoir.
I had the same problem with my '67 jet3super and the way I steered mine-not running-was to take about an 8ft bar and manually pry the front wheels around, while someone pulled the tractor. After I got it running the system resupplied itself it works good. And although It has sat for months, there hasn't been any problem steering it with the engine off.
If the tractor you are looking at will run, I would suggest top off the hydraulic fluid-its supposed to be dextron III-and see if it doesn't steer when you crank it up.
p.s. you put the hydraulic fluid in the dipstick tube on the right side of the 3-point, if yours has a 3-point.
