Back in the winter I used to see all kinds of discussion on pulling on this board. Lately
is seems like there hasn't been any. I pull
an MM U and am having some problems lately
with not being as competetive as I used to be.
I'm thinking about making some engine changes
and would like some opinions. I have posted at
Michael Tomac's tractor pulling site, but I thought maybe some of you other MM guys may not hit that site. How 'bout it guys, want to start some pulling discussion?

I made my own platform and drawbar support. It is basically a copy of the original only shorter.
The drawbar itself has a ring on the end rather than using a clevis. Our rules call for a minimum of 24" from the center of the axle to the point of hook. Mine seem to work better with the drawbar being shorter. I think this is partly because it is stiffer and doesn't flex as much.

We have cut every thing of down to the angel iron and start over too. Cutting a new drawbar out of 1 1/2 by 10 inch plate with a 3" hole in for the hook,and 20" high by 18" for center of axle. It really pulles down on the ass end. But I have heard of hitch being bolted down form where the pto plate cover is instead of a belly type drawbar ? glenn

I don't know if that would be legal by NATPA
rules. Their rules say that no drawbar braces can be attached above the center of the axle.

I read your post on Antique tractor pulling site
and was interested in what pistons you are using
that are 4 13/16". I've got a 403 UB with MM cast pistons and was wondering if it will hold
together at 3000 RPM.

The pistons are custom forged made by Jahns piston
co. I got them from Welters Farm supply in MO.
They advertised them in the MM magazines. Mine
has been together since 1992. No problems with the bottom end. I did have the whole rotating assembly balanced.

How you doing,I pull MM's too.I have been pulling a 48 U and a 50 G for about 17 years now. And still make the fellows shake in fear when they the two fo them roll in, even if it is down to two or three time a year.I amin the process of putting a GBD togeather now that I hope to run yet this year. What kind of trouble are you having? Glenn

My problem is that I'm getting beat by tractors
that I used to beat. As far as I know they haven't had any new work done to them. I think my main problem is not getting hooked up to the track. I would also like to try to find some more
power without tearing into the short block. I think I can gain some with more head and manifold work, but I'm not sure what to do. Right now I need some ideas of what I might be doing wrong
with not getting hooked up. I'm not doing anything different than I always did. What kind of head, manifold and carb system are you running?

The M5,670 Lp intake works about the best,at least that's what I think. Have you ever heard of extruding, thats where they run an abrasive through the manifold over and over untill it is smooth as glass.If you try this make sure the guy does all the hand work [ reaming the holes to make them larger ] first, that way it gets blended in better. Also I sent my carb. to Motec and he did one of there ultimate jobs on it,he told me when he finished it would handle a 800 ci. motor. He does a get job. I am running 4232 heads M5 intake, G exhost, G carb. that motec did. Maybe you did not do anything different, but the other guys got smarter with their set ups. Make sure your drawbar is maxed, maybe try a sharpening the edge up on your tires, and keep a good watch on tire presure. The hot sun can realy mess with that. Glenn
