Thanks for any help TR

Four straight pipes really isn't a header. A header works by having different lenght tubes meeting in a common pipe. The length of the tubes is used to time the negative pressure that follows an exhaust stroke in common chamber,(the larger pipe that they are mated in. This gives the intake an extra bit of suction during valve overlap. four straight pipes wouldn't have the same effect but it would look,(and sound) pretty cool.

Back when I read all the racing stuff I could get my hands on, I am sure I read that the best headers had exactly the same length tubing from each cylinder. Their diameter and length as well as the diameter of the larger collection tube was also important. And the fewer and broader radius curves the better.

Thanks for the reply Andy. I have heard that the pipes would help the HP. Would there ba a chance that they would damage the engine in ANY way?? if so i would not want to do it. Have read that small long pipes would help low end torque. TR

I think 4 straight pipes would help as the exhaust is easly forced out. I think exhaust gas temps would be lower. I would like to hear results from someone who's dynoed the difference. With a true header the runnerlength and diameter are important; different lengths and diameters effect at what RPM's the header will work the best. The idea is the same: to create negative pressure in the header pipes at a given rpm. I don't know what diameters would be best. I'm sure there are formulas for displacement and rpms, to figure diameter and length. there is a guy who posts on here named LW who has built headers for MM pullers. I would check with local rules before getting too far as they may not allow it.

If you can, dyno before and after to see what the results were. I would love to know.

I know there was U at the MM show in McConnellsburg Pennsylvania with header pipes on it. Does anyone have a picture they could post?
