Quite some time ago during the Con. Rod discussion, reference was made to off set grinding the rod journals on a G - Crank for a 6.2 inch stroke, and using the 10.0 inch U - rods, rather then the 11.243 inch G - rod. What other parts are used with this combination to make it work? I'm assuming that because of the 1.243" difference in the rod length that a person could use the stock height U - cylinders, or the bigger bore G-1000 gas cylinders. What about pistons? I'm assuming that the wrist pin location would have to be different then stock. Can someone give me all the specifics that I would need to install this combination, such as which heads, cylinders, etc. This information would be very much appreciated. I have a '53 UTS that I plan on building into a puller this winter. Mistakes cost money, so it would be great to get some input from some people that have done this combination, so I get it right the first time!

I have pulled the combination you are looking for for about 6 years.I used 10A15154 M5 blocks which are the same height as the U blocks.The rods are U rods but need to be narrowed about 1/8 to fit crankshaft journal.This was done by the machinist who did the crank.After he offset gound the crank he put the same radius on the narrowed rod bearings as crankshaft.The pistons are from Welters Farm Supply .They are Jahns pistons with piston pins relocated for this very application.The rings are Total Seal rings also purchased from Welters.The pistons are 43/4 .060 bore.My crank offset ground he came up with about 6.180 stroke with offset grinding only.A lot more can be had by welding up crank.This combo does not require any internal grinding in crankcase and has enough clearance on camshaft also.This combo makes about 447 cubic inches.This is a good reliable combo .Call Welters Farm Supply at 417-498-6496 . They can set you up with all the parts .

On August 8th I took my MM U to a tractor pull. I just bought this tractor last week. I got beat by WD's and JD G's we were cheated by the sled guys. I was in stock class and Im running 90 hp and getting beat in stock class what do I need so even if I do get cheated I still take it for a full pull.

Either cheat more than them or don't go back to that particular pull. There are a few pulls I don't go to any more for the same reason.

Everett and Welters sell the exact piston that you need. They are 4 3/4" +.060 over with a short
compression height. You need to have M5 blocks bored to fit these pistons.

Don't know nothin' 'bout them technical details,but I'd say you got the right tractor picked out! Went to a pull at the Clay cty. fair in Barnesville, Mn. last week and 2 Moline UB's stole the show,even though the field was 50% JD's. Grandpa farmed with Olivers, was mighty dissappointed in them, they were the doormat in almost every class. Antique pulling is big! They had about 70 entries, so we didn't get to see the rest of the fair! By the time the pull finished at 12:30, everything else was closed!

I would think you would need custom pistons or
spacers between the crankcase and the blocks.
The NATPA doesn't allow spacers. Check the rules for your organization. What bore are you planning on using? You could use the 4-5/8 bore blocks from a 336 if the rules allow. They are the same height as the 283 block though. Here is a tip:
go to your favorite auto parts store and ask them
to give or sell you one of their engine parts spec books. These books give dimensions on pistons, sleeves, valves, valve guides etc. They can be very helpful to find off-the-shelf parts that may work instead of buying expensive custom
parts.

Try contacting Matt Gall at Motec Engineering. He is very knowledgable at building this combination. I know of at least one of his motors that did very well at the Columbia MO NATPA pull this winter. He can tell what you need to know. If you can't find his e-mailaddress let me know and I will get it and his phone # for you.
