I have a 335 that runs clean, but the governor seems to either be at an idle or racing. I may take a look in my Jet Star book and look at adjustment. Is it possible this is plain wore out? Who has experience tinkering with these buggers? They usually are very responsive.

The original governors on the 335 & 445 were ball type governors. The problem thaey had was the balls got flat spots worn on them & then they wouldn't operate smoothly & causing surging & erratic operation. Many of them have been replaced by the newer roller style governor or by the even later flyweight type governor. They all work on the same principle, when the engine goes faster, the governor fork is forced rearward & moving the exterior governor arm forward against the spring (assuming the setscrew hasn't come out or loose that holds the fork to the arm). To tell if there is a problem with the governor or internal linkage, I disconnect the linkage to the throttle lever (the spring), move the throttle toward the center of its travel, have someone start it up while you hold the governor arm. When it is running, if the internal parts are working properly, the governor will try to make the tractor idle down when you pull rearward on the external governor arm.

Check the external parts for adjustment and/or breakage. The rest is inside, could be a fork problem, if a governor issue itself, no repairs, buy NEW, they"re CHEAP. DO NOT run this engine much with your problems, could be catastrophic! We stock new ones here. When working on these engines it is wise to just install a new one right away.
