1950 UTS governor and idle problem

I have a 1950 UTS that does not want to idle down. The governor that was on the tractor when I bought it will rev the tractor up but when you pull back on the throttle it does not idle down. You have to stand next to it and run it by hand to keep the motor from running away. I thought I had a bad governor so I swaped with a different one and it did the same thing. Do I have two bad governors or is something else wrong? Is it very common for a governor to go bad?
Thanks for any help.
Kenny

There is one more thing besides linkage to check if that does not do the trick. It is usually the linkage. The throttle plate in the top of the carb is in up side down. If I remember correctly, the number or letters will always be facing UP. The edges are cut at an angle and if it is not in correctly, it will stay opened when it is suppose to be in the idle position of fully closed....deadeye

KPL - I agree with Len - unlikely you got 2 bad governors in a row! More likely it's a linkage or adjustment problem.

First make sure governor to carb linkage is connected properly (punch below for a photo) and that it works easily: With the throttle lever at idle manually lift the linkage - it should drop freely by gravity when you let go. If it does not find and fix the bind (could be a twisted link, bent carb throttle shaft, etc.)

Next try bending the gov to carb link slightly (increase the angle of bend at the "kink" in the center of the link). Now try it to see if there's any improvement.

If the governor begins to control speed, keep bending the link a little at a time and testing until it works correctly.

Thanks Bob. Sounds like I need to look a little closer at my linkage rod. I have two different ones. One has a thredded adjusting piece, and one is just a solid rod. I should be able to make one of them work. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. Now I have some ideas on what might be wrong and how to fix it.

I've purchased 2 tractors that had the carb linkage lever reversed so governor opened instead of closed. Also, incorrect linkage or linkage adjustment is common. Governor bearings or other internals can fail, but odds of 2 in a row are poor; however, governor action should be noticeable as revs climb above idle when throttle is lightly open.

Sounds like a linkage or adjustment problem if you tried a second gov.

I'm working on an Avery V with gov, problems. Same ones actually. The shaft was badly worn and the thrust bearing was sticking by getting cought on the groves also the pivit was sticky. I made a new shaft and am looking for a replacement thrust bearing. I don't know if those gor replaced when you changed yours.
