Wondering where a good place is to purchase rod and main bearings and piston rings. Also wondering what the feelings are on shaving the head good idea or not and if so what is a safe amount. Also same question about boring the engine oversize. Thanks for your input Ryan

The last time I rebuilt a U engine, I got the parts at NAPA. I'm thinking your '46 tractor should have a KEF engine. It will have the 4 cylinders in 1 block. Later U's had cylinders in pairs.

since you are limited in cylinder head options for that model, I would suggest just fixing it back stock and only overboring if you have to.

The pistons in that engine are the type that are held in with a setscrew, and if you have to go to a larger bore, you will have to get the sides of the pin boss on the rods cut down so they will work in the later style pistons. At least that is what I had to get done to a 49U engine I rebuilt.

I'm pretty sure you can have the block sleeved and put back with the old pistons, if you need to.

As far as I know, the same rings and bearings fit both the KEF and later 283 engine. If by chance your engine is a KEC, The bearings are different, I looked it up once, but can't remember if its rods, mains or both.

I would check with Everetts 740-922-3335, or Welter's 417-498-6496 for the engine parts.
