Valve Removal Question

I am trying to remove the valves on my 1950 ZAU. I am using a valve spring compressor, am able to get the spring compressed, but do not know how to remove the retaining clips. Is there some trick or tool to get those things free? I have never done this, so am sure I am doing something wrong. I appreciate your help.

compress the spring slightly and take a hammer and punch and rap on the retainer. If you compress too much, the keepers will jump right out, so be careful.

On second thought, most times you don't have to compress the spring. just rap on the retainer with a hammer and punch. That should loosen the keepers.
