I'm in the process of putting together a 335 for pulling.The compression is a little higher than it was when it was stock.The starter will not roll it over even once with just my compression gauge in one hole,let alone with all 4 plugs.I already have our resident Michigan M-M guru,Mr.Ethan Berryski,working on this for me.Would any of you folks out there know if any M-M diesel starter might work?I need to have it going by the third week in February.Going to try and put a spanking on some of those Fords,IH's,and olivers down in Indiana.Thanks in advance,Marty.

Marty: You might try some more voltage? If it's a 12 volt starter a 12 and 6 volt battery would get you 18 volts. That along with some good heavy welding cable might do the trick. Might shorten the starter life a bit. (-;
What weight class can you get a 335 in?

My first thought is will the starter roll it over without anything in the plug holes? Seems like a good starter should have no problems, unless you have too tight a fit somewhere.

I'm not sure the block will accept a diesel starter. (The one on my Jet3 mounts with three bolts. Your starter uses a setscrew.) and I'm thinking you will have to install a different flywheel with a ring gear that will mate to the drive on the diesel starter. Then you run into the problem of the clutch. I think some 335s use a 1" smaller clutch than the jetstar diesel.

If you are 100% sure you don't have a fit problem (You did lube the bearings, pistons and rings, didn't you?) Your best bet might be to try a good 12v starter for a Jet3, 445, or 4star that uses a setscrew mount.

Kelvin, Thanks for your concern,but I've built a dozen or more of these old pullers(although this is my first moline),and I always put them together a little loose side.This one is just shy of 14:1 comp.,and it has two and a half more inches of stroke on it,so I don't think there's any way a stock gas starter will fire it.I can grab the crank pulley and easily turn it over,and my tach reads more than 400 rpm when I kick in the starter,so binding is not an issue.Once again,thanks for your concern,and if you have any more ideas,feel free to mail me anytime. Marty
