My father who recently passed away had a moline tractor that he was restoring. A friend tells me that it is probably a 50's model. How can I tell what model the trator is and how much it might be worth?

We live in Kentucky and lots of people like to restore and show these old tractors. I do not know very much about restoring it but would like to learn. Also would like to know if my mom should just sell it, that is if the cost of restoration would be too much.

little story for you Judy, lost my dad one year ago chirstmas, he had an 1850 oliver in the barn old brute served him well over the years in dad's retirement days he decided to restore it.fixed small leaks, sheet metal dings, sanded her down got the correct paints, ordered decals sent me on a two day drive for rear hubs he could'nt go for health reasons.dad got most every thing done not a perfect restoration but a darn good job to say the least. dad passed ' us boys put his tractor back together. would not sell her for a million bucks. I can work her or show her or drag a wagon full of kids around and Dad is somehow rigt there on the fender grining from ear to ear.

The model will be on the serial number tag and should be on the right hand side of the transmission case. (Right hand determined facing the rear of the tractor.)

I think Kelvin meant facing the front of the tractor while seated on the seat, otherwise, look on both sides of the trans case for a 3"x5" tag. John

If the tractor runs and drives ok it wouldnt take too much to restore. Just a lot of elbow grease and love.
Check the serial number section of this site to determine the age.
Valve ???? check the photo ads here also and narrow your search but typing in tractor type.
I may be interested if you decide to sell
Dave

10A5334 is a Cover per old Repair Parts Price list it sold for $1.55 in 1958 - not very definitive info, need to get more info - see prev post. FYI 10A5333 was a shim used in motor area from UB to GVI not that that means anything other than a general dating probably post 1952 if p/n were assigned in reasonably chronological way.

It appears you have stumbled onto a reasonably rare bird - as i understand it the diesel version of the 445 was pretty rare - rated 5 stars in Rukes's MM Tractors Buying Guide. I think there was another post recently that said there were only about 150 made - but You may want to repost as a 445 Diesel question. The tag would sound like a Gov't disposition record - might be interesting to try and track its history, but S/N does not match Military s/n listing. Best. Ed

Just checked my s/n listing - it appears 101 series is correct 1956, but although not definitive - it appears diesel not avail til 1958 and had a different serial sequence beginning 152. So I'm wondering if you have a really odd bird or a gas tractor converted to diesel (I would think this unlikely). By the way, the motor for gas would be a 206H4 starting s/n 100 while the diesel would be a D206-4 starting 117. motor s/n plate should be on block on a plate similar to tractor plate you found.

Having said all that, I'm assuming primary value is as a tractor to work rather than a major collector. Primedia (formerly I&T?) publishes a Used Tractor Guide that is generally used for working tractors as opposed to collectors. It shows the 445 diesel in 1956 (but I have found lots of mistakes as to config - so don't count on that) - anyway - range is $1020 Fair, 1540 Good, or 1790 Premium. All less repairs - so if you have to do a major rebuild value could be very low. I'm guessing yours is Fair condition. Subtract $100 for a pair of front tires & tubes. Subtract a couple of hundred per rear tire IF they are bad (as I recall you said they were good). Check clutch and all trans gears. Check water for oil and oil for water. Add something for implements, but I have seen a lot of cases where implements were thrown in at minimal value - they have no value if they do not suit your purpose for tractor. And a lot depends on location.

I guess as a working tractor in fair condition I would probably figure $900 + $300 for implements - go a little lower if it looks poorly - a little higher if you really want this tractor and the implements suit you. I bought a pretty good AC D15 (gas) with factory 3 point for about $1000 + $125 for manifold. But yours is diesel which should be a premium assuming everything works - I think based on your description I would probably top out at the $1790 or less incl all implements. By the time you add tires battery (Sams can s/o the correct long 12v tractor battery) and filters and oil / fluids change with a little for contingencies you should be about $2100-2200 into the tractor. Or if your constraint is avoiding additional costs of a Divorce lawyer, just be honest and tell the seller that your limit is $$$.

From a collectors point of view, it must be correct engine / tractor combination to have any value. Dean & Swinson's Value Guide shows a mid range of 2150 for a 1958 diesel or 1775 for a 1956 gas 445. Low ends are in mid three figures say $500. In absolute premium condition - sparkling paint and all correct the 56 gas tops out at $3775 and the 58 Diesel at $4100. But I've never seen a tractor bring near their top price range. And don't ever expect to buy a tractor and make money on it as an investment. Exception might be if you had docs proving some unique pedigree such as experimental tractor (look for letter X in the castings) and it would still need to be in correct premium condition, but it might then fetch more than top book to the right buyer.

Best. Ed
