Sticky Valve?

I have a 1950 MM ZAU that I have been told probably has a "sticky" valve. What is the most likely cause of this? What should I be looking for as the culprit component?
What are some of the "symtoms" of a "sticky" valve?

Compression tester may help you isolate the cylinder that it is on, if you have one. It may be more than one if the engine has been setting for a while. When changing oil, instead of putting in all of the recommend oil, hold out a quart and then add a quart of Marvel Mystry Oil. Or better yet add a quart of Mystry oil to the old oil, run until it is good and warm, then change. It sure won't hurt it any either way you do it...deadeye

backfire out the intake or explosions in the exhaust manifold.
poor idle with no other cause. (like fuel mix or weak spark)
weak power from 1 cylnder.

These are a few possible symptoms of a "sticky valve" or valve trouble in general.

What i understand a sticky valve to be is a valve that doesn't close/seal completely every time. Can be due to too close tappet clearance, weak spring, or eroded valve or seat.
