I"ve installed new bearings and seals in the Big Mo 500. My manual says to pre-load the bearings so that the rolling torque is 30-130 inch pounds more than with no pre-load.

Since I don"t have an in-lb. torque wrench, my question is how many thousandths of an inch pre-load should I set them to?

Thanks in advance for any advice, Ross

Wish I'd had that info when I was in the back axles on my Big MO 400.

Since torque measurement in inch pounds is actually a leverage measurement, 130 inch pounds would be the same as 13 lb. at the end of a 10" lever. 30 inch pounds would be the same as 3 pounds at the end of a 10" lever.

[or 130 inch pounds could be same as 26 pounds at the end of a 5 inch lever, just so you see the relationship between the numbers. 5 inches x 26 pounds = 130 inch pounds]

Example: (10" from the center of the axle. 13lb x 10 inches=130 inch pounds.)

To do this right, you'd need to fix a lever to the axle measure out 10" then find the correct stack of shims so that it would take from 3 to 13 lb to turn the axle.
