U302 oil supply tube to rocker arms

Rebuilding engine for MM U302. Looks like it has been done before.When I removed the oil supply tube( steel tube about 12" long,about 5/16 diameter on left side of block) a steel rod about 5" long fell out.Can see no useful purpose of this rod, maybe last rebuild screwup.Manual doesn't show this rod. Rod probably restricts oil flow to top of engine. Should I leave out this rod?

There is no part shown in the parts book, but that piece is important. Its purpose is to restrict the oil flow to the rocker arms. Without it, the rockers get too much oil, letting it flood the valve stem area. Then oil consumption thru the flooded guides. Seems like they could have made a better regulating system than that, but what you see is what you get.

I think John I remember seeing a service bulletin on this too. This was done at the dealer level and not factory and that's why there is no listing in the book for it. I may have the Bulletin too.

It seems to me that last time this question came up, somebody said it depends which parts book you look at. So they must be in only the very last revisions of the books printed.

When I tore my engine out of a brown Uni apart, there was no rod inside the pipe, there was one in my Big Mo 400 engine. I was told they didn't install these on the Uni engines. I put one in the Uni engine when I put it in my 400, haven't had any problems.
