Running unleaded fuel will cause valve seat recession fairly quickly when operating under heavy loads. Unleaded has no lubricant for the valve seats. It is recommended that a lead additive be used if the original valve configuration is used. When doing a valve job, Hardened valve seat inserts can be installed and this will eliminate the valve recession problem for good. Yes with light use, They may last a long time with unleaded, But I have seen many heads with the seats worn up into the head caused by unleaded fuel.

unleaded is all that has been made for the past 20 years, the first unleaded (Starting in 1974) was the 87 octain with the 89 octain being leaded for a few years but for the last 20-25 years all the grades are unleaded. I would say that if it ran since 1980 it would have been using the unleaded

You should have no problem with the unleadeed and as said on the other boards there only time that you might have problems is with a high speed engine that would not be in a tractor, if valve seat problems then it is from some other reason than the unleaded gas. When unleaded came out in 74 our supplier did not install the extra tanks fir it, just droped the leaded regular and we did not know for 15 years that we were running on unleaded and all we had were gas, never have had a deisel, all the heavy plowing and all was always and still done on unleaded with no additives

Broken govenor bearing/race. in reply to jobguy, 12-23-2004 13:26:01
Thank you. I have had my JetStar about 1 year. I us it for mowing brush and tall grass. Has worked great. The govenor rollerbearing/race broke though. I installed a conmpensating spring on the linkage and this almost works as good as the govenor. Pulled all the brooken pieces out of the pan, now need to figure out how/where to get a replacement part. If I could find the specs on the part I bet a supplier could replace it.

I wouldn't mess with ruining a good engine. They won't run very well with a rod hanging out of the block. I just buy a new one from Dale they are good folks. I never done bussiness with them yet but heard nothing but good from them.

Be extremely careful when running that tractor with a bad governor, we"ve seen very bad things happen in those situations. We stock NEW governors for that tractor, 920 295 3278 or [email protected], Dale

I've had a Brown Jet since '88, a 4 Star since '90, I live in the Chicago area, been using unleaded in them since that's all I can get. We even have a "reformulated" gas in the winter, which is even worse and I've used that as that's all we can get. Seems no damage, I use them for plowing, discing, baler, and snow plowing so they don't get to sit too much.
