how do you get them out without taking crank out?

This works on smaller engines and may work on a U-get a cotter pin big enough that each half is almost but not quite the thickness of the bearing insert. bend the halves to a 'T' shape, and stick it in the oil hole in the crank. Your T may have to sort of run at an angle so the 2 legs will fit flat against the crank.

loosen all the main caps about 1-2 turns. remove the cap from the bearing you want to remove.

Then stick the cotter pin in the oil hole, and rotate the crank toward the side OPPOSITE the locator tab on the bearing. The cotter pin should snag the upper insert and roll it out on the crank. Of course, you remove the half in the cap the regular way.
