Avery didn't make BFs. They made A's V's and Rs. There are 2 versions of the A. Both have grilles with horizontal bars, the early grilles sloped back from bottom to top. The later grilles curved back at both the top and bottom. If they had hydraulics they used a hydraulic reservoir/cylinder/control valve assembly hung on the right frame rail. V's used a smaller engine. (ZXB) and had a flat grille with horizontal bars. Depending on year some wer made as Averys and some were made as MMs. The serial number for a V is on the top of the right frame rail, near the carburetor. BF Avery introduced the R right before the merger. So you see red R's as well as some yellow Rs. they used the same engine and transmission as the A, but the grille on an R is made of rippled sheet with thousands of tiny punched holes in it. They still used the same hydraulic reservoir/cylinder/control valve as the Avery A. Minneapolis Moline added their uni-matic hydraulic system to the Avery R and called it the BF. The main difference is the cylinder is separate from the MM type reservoir/control valve assembly which is under the fuel tank. I read somewhere that the serial number on early Averys and Cletracs is on the frame rail, near where the operator's right foot rest is. It may be on the undersize of the rail. I hope this helps you identify yours.
