UTU Questions take 2

Ours is a 1949, and I cant figure out how to shut the belt pulley off, is it always on? I cant find a lever on the pulley.

What do I remove to take off the lift arms? Everything? Then where do I mount the hyd lever, anywhere?

The seat is a plain old steel one, no springs, no cushions. Did these originally have a back rest as an option like others I have seen?

The fenders are mounted on the end of the axles, looks like someone has made a bracket for the top bolt, Is there enough room to mount them on the insides of the axles? Looks like they would fit the axle better, but I am not sure if there is enough room.

What is the current HP of my machine, and how much could I get out of it cheaply (switching to LP heads, G crank, etc) without extensive machining.

It should be obvious how to remove the lift arms. If your U has live hydraulics, you can put quick disconnects at the manifold junction at the rear of the transmission so you can still use the cylinder with trail type implements.

If you want to make it lighter, take the pump, reservoir, manifold pipes, etc. off. You should be able to find a front gas tank support for without hydraulics, if you advertise around.

I don't think the seat had a backrest. I bought a '49 that had just the pan seat. Lots of them were upgraded to the cushion seat. If you want to upgrade to a backrest, go ahead. Allis used them.

I don't really understand your fender question, but if your fenders are original, (If they are early fenders) you should be able to mount them about 6" out from the inner axle housing flange. There is 1 bolt at the top and a bolt in front and back. The later fender was flat on the bottom and used an adapter to bolt it to the axle housing. You should be able to find the adaper if you need it, too. Some axles have 2 places to mount, some don't. I don't know why the difference.

The current HP should be around 40. I'll let the 'pullers tell you how to get some real hp out of her.
