The Z is 6 volt. However all 6 volt systems are weak in terms of cranking and starting unless the battery is new and points, plugs and condenser are good. Years ago there was an 8 volt battery available that was said to give more cranking power. I don't know if they are still available, but probably they are. The plus was that you could just bolt them in and not change the generator or light bulbs, and they did spin the starter better and also fire the points which resulted in better starting. The minus was that it was hard to keep them properly charged with the 6 volt generator. By the way, the Z is a positive ground system in case you haven't noticed.

Good comments JLM. I think I remember there was a way to change the voltage regulator so that it would charge the 8 volt battery, but I am not sure on the details.

The best thing I ever did for my ZA was change it to a 12 volt negative ground with a little 60 amp Delco alternator. Really not that hard to do and it starts worlds better, even in the cold. Just something to think about if you are actually using the tractor and not just putting it in shows.
