Need help on serial# ID

I have found a wheatland style tractor that I am trying to identify. It has a 4 cylinder with factory looking propane set up. It has ensign regulators and carb. Tractor also has a pto. The serial number I found was on the lower left side of the engine block on a MM stamped tag 340A - 4. Is this the engine serial number or the tractor serial number. If not the tractor Number where would it be located. Thank you.

Woodrow,
The 340A-4 engine was most commonly used in the GTC tractor from 1951-1953. All GTC tractors were LP. The serial # on the right side of the trans housing should be something like "0470XXXX". There were only 1101 of these tractors made. It is also possible this motor was used in some special military applications.

If this is a GTC I have found, would it be a replacement for the earlier made U. I saw a 1947 U repainted in the galley from pumpkin head. This tractor looks very simular to his. How did MM letter these tractors? Was UD a diesel U? Was this GTC a later series following the U? Is it unrelated? I have no MINI-MO knowledge as you can see. Last will the tractor serial # be cast into the tranny or A stamped aluminum or brass Plate? Thanks fellows. Woodrow

Woodrow,
While the U and G series share some similarities the G is the big brother to the U series. The G series was the largest tractors MM made at the time. The U series were the next smaller size followed by the Z series and finally the R series was the smallest (until Moline bought out Avery and sold their BF/BG and V models). The G was only made in standard tread (wheatland). The U series was made in Standard, Universal (narrow front), N (single front), E (extendable wide front) and Industrial versions. The G series tractor started in 1938 with the GT/GTS, replaced by the GTA in 1942, replaced by the GTB in 1947, replaced by the GB in 1955. The first G diesels came out in 1953 with the GTBD. All gasoline G tractors had 403 engines. Only the GTC LP had the 340. The G diesels had 425 6 cylinder. The tractor serial # will be on a tag rivited to the trans housing on the right side. It is not stamped directly into the casting.

We have determine the serial number to be 04701044. I believe this is a 1953 GTC from what you guys have written. Your info is really appreciated. Thanks!

Woodrow, the number you found is the motor number the tractor number is on the transmission area under the clutch lever maybe six didgets with a S after? if the tag on the motor is 340A-4 it's early U or a speical so see if that S is there on the tag if I'm thinking right about the 340A motor. Joe
