MM 4-star air breather mesh is all rusted junk. I pulled out all the old stuff. Now, what can I put in there to replace it? From what I can tell the canister does not come apart. Are there separate pieces of the mesh that can be stuffed in it ??jim

I once did a pile of research on this. Spoke with Donaldson who made the oil bath systems and made contact with their original mesh suppliers. At the end of the day, there is no commercially available supply as per original design. However, I have used permanent fibreglass furnace filter element (you can get these at TSC stores, or any decent hardware) and cut to length, roll it up and stuff it in the housing. I experimented with the effects of oil and it seems to stand up. The pour size is very similar to the expanded wire mesh original. Just another way to do it fellas.

Yes, look in the dishwashing isle. You could possibly try a "chore boy" brand of scouring pad, but check on the material first. I believe
AC used the same "guts" on their transmission filler as the 4 Star.

If its not totally rusted away, there is a framework affair that is spotwelded into the bottom of the air cleaner canister around the edge, just inside the lip where the cup clamps on and it holds the canister together. Just drill out those spotwelds, and put sheet metal screws back in when you reassemble with new steel wool, like Kevin M said.

Yes, steel wool does rust, but in that environment, it should get a slight mist coat of oil every time the tractor runs.

You could put some 3/0 plain steel wool in it an replace it the bottom of it with wire cloth. Just don't pack the wool in tight. You can get it at any Sherwin Williams paint store or hardware store in your area.

Steel wool rust very fast and I would not use it. I beleive that the original material was more like steel shavings. I would use the plastic dish washing pads scotch brite. I use these pads to filter the air that goes into my compressor and it works very good.
