Hello. I have a 1938 Z. I bought it of an estate sale and it has not run in 5 years or so,
and I have tried everything I can think of to get it going....I bought a brand new mag for it and when I went to install it the first thing I discovered is that the mark for TDC are not on the Flywheel where the original ownwer manual says it should be...so I removed the valve covers wathching the intake valve on #1 and I felt for the piston to come to the top while on its compression stroke..when the piston reached the top both valves are closed anf the magneto drive coupling is parallel to the crank as should be, so I slapped the mag on, rotor pointed toward # 1. I rechecked the flywheel, and as suspected the mark wasnt lined up, it already went by the pointer by about a 1/8 of a revolution... but I figured it shouldnt matter as long as I found the compression stroke right? I sprayed some gas down the #1 hole and cranked and cranked (with a good 12 volt battery) while spraying a little gas in the carb....but nothing, not even a pop , sputter or backfire...I even tried the mag at a few random positions and still nothing.....Any Ideas? I mean, with spark , gas and compression, you should get some sort of reaction....right???

Are you sure this ZTU is all original? Maybe someone was playing with it & had the same problems you had & gave up. The timing gears for a mag engine & a distributor are different also. I don"t know what other mags will fit this engine, but could the mag possibly be rotating in the opposite direction than the original?

I dont know how original it is , the mag I bought is just like the one I took off of it and I do believe the previous owner new what he was doing, he had 60+ Molines in his collection, and that he had it running before he passed away....This Z looks as though its been all gone through front to back once upon a time...There were several plaques and Cards from the mid-1990's of the shows he took it to. His name was Alvin Egbert, and I bought it through Aumann Auctions at his estate sale back in June. Perhaps some of you may remember this Auction or maybe even attended it.

Brand new mag? Is it a Fairbanks Morse or an IH? I had a Wico that was good, but the impulse fingers wouldn't trip regularly when mounted vertical.(It ran my '38 ZTU great if I pulled if off with another tractor)

A Fairbanks FMJ with a coupling that says UB on it has springs to force the impulse fingers out where they will trip. I'm told that some IH mags also have springs on the impulse fingers.

Can you hear the impulse snap regularly when you spin it over?

I'd suggest you check for a regular spark with the magneto mounted on the engine.

Try pulling #1 plug wire and placing the tip a short distance from metal, turning the engine over and checking if it is really sparking at TDC. When I put a mag on I go a little past TDC so the impulse would have clicked and there would be no resistance on the cogs. Other than that, I have had FM mags that have the impulse post moved to another hole and they will fire at a different point than what you expect. You can tell that by the first test or by listening for the impulse to click as you go over TDC.

Yes, I was there too and bought a GTA that was back on skid row. If you email me I can give you the guys name that help Aumann's with getting those tractors running. He may have some insight for you to try. Email me I left it open for you.
