Just bought a 602 diesel and was wondering if they have any unusual weaknesses or quirks I should watch out for. Will be used on a 9ft hay bine, moving round bales on the 3pt along with clipping pasture with a 10ft rotary mower. The ampli torque is good and I have been advised to warm the tractor up to operating temperature before using the low side. Any advise is appreciated. Fred

Congratulations!I have a 602 on propane,it is a very good tractor. The hydraulics are strong but the controls are a little different. The steering valve down under the radiator tends to leak a little. One thing that mine does,if you stop on an incline or under load the shifter will not come out of gear. You have to pull the torgue back and it shifts easily.I am told this is normal. I was a diehard born and raised JD man when I got this tractor.I now have 7 MM's and only 1 JD.I dont know how it happened but somehow my 602 is reproducing and I keep finding more molines in my shed!!LOL Moline

There is nothing to fear about your 602. They are a good tractor. Dad bought a disassembled 602 Diesel about 5 years ago. We overhauled the whole thing from front to back(engine,T/A,radiator,hyd. pump, etc, etc, etc). It was alot of work, but now we have a good small sized tractor for odd jobs. We put about 100 hours a year on the tractor mowing, powering the auger, pulling seed bean wagons and whatnot. Whats more, we only have $3600 into it. You can't buy a worn out JD 3020 for that, and we know that ours is like new again. We also have a 5 Star gas and an M5 gas that are excellent tractors. These are basically the same tractors mechanically and were a good reliable tractor design for M-M. The only downside to these tractors was the lack of good power steering(and some might say low capacity hydraulics). When M-M came out with the 670 Super, which had hydrostatic power steering, they really had a good tractor!
