ZAU Carbon/No Carbon on Pistons

I am in the process of tearing-down my 1950 ZAU. Upon removing the cylinder head, I notice that there is carbon build-up on the top surface of 3 of the 4 pistons, which I expected, but no carbon build-up on the 4th piston surface, which I found fairly odd. I am not a mechanic and am trying to learn what I can.

Why is there no carbon build-up on that 4th piston?

The cylinder may have not been firing due to a valve or intake or spark problem, or there may have been a slight coolant leak into that cylinder froma bad gasket, cracked head, etc..
